ORU Offers New Master’s Degrees in Computer Science and Data Science

Tulsa, OK – Oral Roberts University’s Department of Computing & Mathematics has introduced new master’s degrees in MSCS – Computer Science and MSCS – Data Science. Available to students on campus, the Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) has two concentrations to choose from – Computer Science and Data Science.

According to code.org, there are more than 389,000 computing jobs open nationwide, and less than 72,000 computer sciences students graduated into the workforce last year. Data Science is a rapidly growing concentration within this field. Demand for programmers and data scientists are forecasted to be on the rise for the foreseeable future.

The market demand for MSCS graduates is growing as fast as or faster than the overall computer science graduate market demand. This is primarily due to the need for project and program leaders that are subject matter experts (SMEs). With team sizes growing and the number of teams growing, the number of SMEs is scaling as well. It takes far shorter time to prepare an MSCS graduate for such positions than BSCS graduates and the probability for success in that mentoring is greater for MSCS graduates.

Here we have the opportunity to develop Holy Spirit-empowered computer science leaders whose impact and voice is desperately needed in today’s IT world,” said Dr. Andrew Lang, Senior Professor and Chair of Computing & Mathematics at ORU. “This degree is intended for anyone who wants to be employed in leadership positions in the varied fields of computer science, including data science—they need not to have graduated with a bachelor’s in computer science; however students without adequate previous coursework in computer science may be required to take additional credits for the degree.”

The MSCS program consists of 30.5 credits and can be completed in as few as 12-18 months from our fast-track program. The core curriculum features the following seven courses: Software Engineering (GCSC 511); Distributed Systems (GCSC 544); Advanced Algorithms (GCSC 556); Data Mining and Machine Learning (GCSC 561); Big Data and High Performance Computing (GCSC 562); Artificial Intelligence (GCSC 563); and Automata and Complexity Theory (GCSC 570).
